LIVE BLOG: Closing arguments underway in the Upatoi murder trial

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – Jurors have been dismissed for the evening in the Upatoi murder trial.

The first day of deliberations ended after only an hour Tuesday.

Rufus Burks, 17, stands accused in the deaths of Gloria Short, her son Caleb Short, and granddaughter Gianna Lindsey.

Suspects Raheem Gibson and Javarceay Tapley pleaded guilty before the jury was seated.

Before deliberations, attorneys on both sides used the day to argue their case, one last time.

“This story didn’t end when Mr. Short found his family bloody and beaten to death, and it didn’t end when Mr. Burks and his companions were arrested. So how will this story end?” says Assistant District Attorney, Christopher Williams.

All eyes were on Burks as the Upatoi trial comes to an end.

The State hoping to debunk the idea of the brutal deaths of Gloria Short, Caleb Short and Gianna Lindsey at their Upatoi home was a one-man show.

“Subduing three individuals, it

Investigation into Remains Found in Septic Tank Near Elsa Underway

ELSA – The remains found inside a septic tank near Elsa are believed to be of a woman, according to the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators with the sheriff’s department and Hidalgo County Precinct 1 responded to a home on Mile 4 W Road and Dallas Street Wednesday night. That’s north of Monte Cristo Road.

Deputies responded to a call about suspicious circumstances. The occupant of the home said he first discovered a bone in the septic tank.

Crews with Precinct 1 brought in a backhoe to dig up the area and a crime scene investigator retrieved the femur.

Hidalgo County Sheriff Eddie Guerra said a forensic pathologist confirmed they were human remains.

“We’re sifting through that raw sewage and we have recovered, so far, various ribs. We’ve got the skull. The skull does have the teeth intact,” he said. “We’re at that process right now. Obviously, it’s going to take a while.”

Guerra said analysts are comparing the

Murder trial for slain UNT student underway – North Texas Daily

An emotional first day of testimony in the murder trial of Eric Johnson, a former Marine accused of fatally shooting UNT student Sara Mutschlechner on New Year’s Day of 2016, concluded Tuesday.

Johnson allegedly fired two shots from a 9mm handgun into the vehicle Mutschlechner was driving, striking her in the back of the head. The two were at the intersection of North Elm Street and West University roughly two miles from campus when Mutschlechner was shot and crashed her vehicle.

She died later that day.

State prosecutors Tony Paul and Michelle Dobson recapped the events of that night during their opening statements. According to Paul and Dobson, words were exchanged between the two vehicles Mutschlechner and Johnson were driving, and the conversation eventually escalated.

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) — Closing arguments were underway in the trial of a man accused of killing his estranged wife and dumping her body in the Everglades.

Around noon, prosecution had wrapped their closing arguments and defense was starting their closings in the trial of Cid Torres.

Defense told the jury they are the checks and balances of the judicial system. They said that because his wife Vilet’s body was never found there is no definitive proof of exactly what happened to her. Nevertheless, prosecutors say they have plenty of evidence that Cid killed his wife.

“Cid Torrez was jealous, possessive, manipulative, selfish and has an ego that doesn’t even fit in this courthouse,” said prosecutor Lanie Bandell.

With his fate hanging in the balance, Cid held his hands together and kept his eyes fixed on the jury. He has said he is innocent did not take the stand during his
