Murder trial for Ogden’s Andrew Esquer underway – Standard

OGDEN — The prosecution and defense in the trial of 32-year-old Andrew Esquer agree on one thing: he killed William Patrick Hicks, 32, on July 6, 2015.

The motive is where the parties differ.

Esquer’s defense counsel, Randy Richards, argued in trial Monday and Tuesday that Esquer was acting in self-defense when he shot Hicks in the chest with a sawed-off Remington Model 1100 shotgun.

The shooting happened at about 4 a.m. in the 2900 block of Childs Avenue in Ogden after Hicks allegedly stole about $300 from Angel Mason, a friend of Esquer’s, according to witness testimony. It was her rent and grocery money, Esquer believed.
