Mother of missing gang-involved son speaks out

The Inter-Faith Community Association’s focus is right there in the name: community.

Phyllis Hardison, a member of the association, gave a history of the organization that started in 1980 and has since focused on increasing activities for young people, encouraging qualified African American candidates during elections, helping children with education through tutoring and college preparation, and supporting other local groups, like volunteer fire departments.

“There’s a lot being done by very, very few people,” said association President Jim Roddy.

On Saturday, they brought awareness to an issue facing communities across the nation: gang activity, and how it affects families.

Actor Hill Harper speaks about community involvement

Energy was at the nucleus of a conversation author, actor and philanthropist Hill Harper had with parents, guardians and the community Friday morning.

“The elastic of school funding, teacher quality, the atmosphere in school, culture, energy, language; the No. 1 determining factor of a young person’s performance in school is parental engagement and involvement,” Harper said to a packed room.

Harper, who portrayed a coroner on the CBS drama, “Crime Scene Investigation: New York,” and now has a role as a physician on ABC’s “The Good Doctor,” spoke as part of the School District of Philadelphia’s celebration of Family Engagement Month highlighting familial engagement in student education. “A Conversation with Hill Harper,” was held at district headquarters, 440 N. Broad St.

Harper, who adopted a son earlier this year, said involvement in a child’s life doesn’t have to come from a biological parent.

Oscar Nominee Elisabeth Shue: ‘Battle Of The Sexes’ Speaks To Anyone Who Has Felt ‘Less Than’

“She said, ‘I feel like she is crying for all of us, whenever we feel less than,’” Shue recalled.  “Here I am, a woman who is pretty evolved and relatively brave — could be more brave when it comes to speaking out,” she shared. “And here my daughter, who I have hopefully raised as a powerful woman as well, knows inside there might be something ‘less than’ in her…just because she’s a girl.” Shue sighed audibly thinking about the messages society sends each of us, whether based on gender, sexuality or more. “We think we’re stupid or we’re overweight or…” she trails off. “There’s a million ways people feel ‘less than.’”
