UPDATE: Laflin fire that killed two children ruled arson – Wilkes Barre Times

LAFLIN — Two children are dead and another injured after a house fire that was intentionally set Wednesday night, and a Wilkes-Barre man is in custody for unrelated crimes, authorities say.

Officials ruled the fire an arson at a 5 p.m. press conference at the State Police barracks in Wyoming.

Meanwhile, State Police searched a Wilkes-Barre home as part of their investigation into the fire.

According to a police press release:

Shortly after 7 p.m. Wednesday, Luzerne County 911 received a report of a blaze at 60 Oakwood Drive. State Police arrived and found three boys inside the residence.

Two — a 16-year-old and a 12-year-old — were pronounced dead at the scene by the Luzerne County Coroner’s Office. The third — an 8-year-old — was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

GALESBURG — Galesburg fire officials reaffirm that the Carver Center fire was intentionally set. 

Jeannie Shelton, executive director of the Carver Community Action Agency, has previously disputed that arson ruling at least twice in The Register-Mail. She repeated that sentiment Friday afternoon.

“No one would have any reason to bring harm to that building. No one. I don’t believe that. That building meant so much to so many people,” she said.

“You lose the services that were so important and so important to all the kids we served, and it makes it very difficult because we’re moving around different programs and doing a summer camp program. That facility was important. Yes, I have a real difficult time with that.”

She continued, “It’s too great of a loss and I have a difficult time believing that. I know I’m not an expert, my

Eliabit Mena’s death ruled homicide, police say

LAKEWOOD – The body found in a wooded area off Arlington Avenue Feb. 1 has been positively identified as that of missing Lakewood teen Eliabit Mena, a spokesperson for the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office said Tuesday. Authorities said the Ocean County Medical Examiner ruled Mena’s death a homicide.

Authorities did not say how Mena was killed.
