PHOTOS: These gruesome dollhouse death scenes reinvented murder investigations

From the outside, the 19 dollhouse rooms spread across a darkened space in the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Renwick Gallery look like perfect replicas of familiar spaces: a family home, a neat parsonage, a woman’s bedroom. But inside, under the glow of a flashlight, these meticulous miniaturized spaces are covered in blood spatters, murder weapons and “dead” porcelain figures: A man hanging from a rope in his barn. A girl collapsed backward into a grungy bathtub. A baby shot in its crib.

These are the so-called “Nutshells,” death scenes created by 20th century heiress, scientist and artist Frances Glessner Lee, the “godmother of forensic science,” who made these dioramas of real-life cases to help future investigators do more accurate forensic crime analysis.

Now, visitors to the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C., can also try to solve the cases in Lee’s 19 miniature death scenes — some of them

A crime scene investigator on Friday tabled horrifying photographs of a victim suspected to have been killed by Syokimau Administration Police officers, last year.

Constable Bernard Kiplagat Serem said he took the photographs on July 1, after one of the bodies was seen floating at Athi River near, Donyo Sabuk Police Station in Machakos.

He said the body was stashed in a gunny bag and a diver helped retrieve it from the River. The officer said he took the photos before and after the body was pulled out of the water.

TORTURED

After removing it from the bag, he took the more photos, including one of the victim, naked. The body was later identified as that of boda boda operator, Josephat Mwenda.

Piles of boxes and packages of exhibits were stacked in the courtroom Friday during the trial of Treveno Campbell as the jury viewed drug evidence and photos from the scene of the killing of Memphis police Officer Martoiya Lang.

Memphis Police Department crime scene investigator Charles Cathey said marijuana packaged for sale as well as digital scales were discovered inside the house where Lang was shot Dec. 14, 2012 during a search warrant in the Berclair area. Buckets of marijuana were shown to the jury.

“What’s the significance of digital scales in the drug trade?” Assistant District Attorney Alanda Dwyer asked.

Murder case jury looks at video, photos of crime

Hester W. Jackson didn’t make it to the back door of his home before a burglar inside fired at him.

During the second day of Ojore M. Adams’ trial in Richmond County Superior Court, the jury watched a video and looked at photographs of evidence found at Jackson’s home on Willis Foreman Road. It began with the items he purchased Dec. 8, 2012, for dinner that were found at the corner of his home, in the the pathway Jackson would have traveled from his truck in the driveway to his back door.

Adams, 23, has pleaded not guilty to charges of murder, burglary and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. He and Damarkeo Lockhart, 23, were not arrested in Jackson’s slaying until May 2015 when information revived the cold-case homicide.
