Jury spends hours viewing gruesome photos from Upatoi triple homicide scene – Columbus Ledger

An east Columbus home decorated for Christmas 2015 became a house of horrors the following January when three people were bound with various types of tape and bludgeoned with a 20-pound dumbbell as their blood splattered the walls and pooled on the floor beneath them.

For three hours Tuesday morning, jurors in the triple-homicide trial of Rufus Leonard Burks IV viewed gruesome photos from 3057 Bentley Drive as a crime-scene investigator explained how police collected evidence in the slayings of Gloria Short, 54; her son Caleb Short, 17; and granddaughter Gianna Lindsey, 10.

Gloria Short lay face down in a central hallway, blue painter’s tape around her wrists and extended to encircle her head and neck. Packing tape was around her thighs. A puddle of blood was beneath her head and more was spattered on the walls.

Santa Rosa educators discuss STEM initiatives during symposium (PHOTOS)

MILTON — Santa Rosa County Public Schools and Discovery Education hosted the Second National Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Symposium Jan. 29 to 31.

Approximately 137 school leaders from 20 states met at the Pensacola Beach Hilton to discuss new STEM teaching strategies and visited area schools, according to Discovery Education Senior Vice President Coni Rechner.

This symposium emphasized core concepts of STEM education: collaboration, communication, creativity and critical thinking, also known as the four C’s. Many business leaders can teach new employees the mechanics of specific jobs but they can’t cultivate these skills, Discovery Education Professional Development Content Manager Lynnell Matthews said.

“It was a light bulb for many of our teachers and administrators that are here realizing that STEM doesn’t mean science, technology, engineering and math,” Matthews said. “(STEM is) the best practices for

Continued erosion causes observation deck at Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk to collapse

PORTAGE — The circular, concrete observation deck overlooking Lake Michigan at the Portage Riverwalk and Lakefront collapsed over the weekend.

It is the latest blow to the park that has been suffering from erosion the past few years. The continued erosion was compounded recently as high waves and strong winds battered the shoreline.

Portage Park Superintendent Jenny Orsburn said she was informed of the collapse Sunday night. The area was roped off with caution tape and barriers to prevent people from wandering onto the area.

The 60-acre park is owned by the National Park Service and managed by the Portage Park Department. Federal officials were unavailable Monday because offices were closed in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

Orsburn said she planned to meet with Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Superintendent Paul Labovitz this week to assess the damage, determine a monetary
