New Brock Experience to send students to the border to see immigration in action

Some of the latest changes to Longwood University are not in the physical construction of the campus, but the new potential courses that are being made available to students. The Brock Experiences program was started in 2016 as a way of making traveling courses that will take trips all over the United States, as well as one that will bring students to the Arctic Circle.

One of the first two Brock Experiences courses is the Borderlines class, available for the summer of 2018. The class will focus on immigration, splitting time between Richmond and Tucson, Arizona. In both locations, students will interact with and learn about the local immigrant communities.

Spanish professor Dr. Renee Gutiérrez and criminal justice professor Dr. Connie Koski. Gutiérrez held an information session on the class on Monday, Feb. 5 for any interested potential students. This meeting had a very light attendance, though Gutiérrez said at least 15

Neighbors get hands-on experience with policing

TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) –

It’s back to class for several Toledoans as they learn what it takes to be TPD. They will spend the next ten weeks enduring the citizen police academy. It will prepare them to help keep our city safe.

There was a total of 26 people, some old, young, city council members and more, all wanting to learn more about the Toledo Police Department; Including Blair Johnson. 

“I’m just ready for class,” said Johnson.

He lives in the Glass City and signed up for the citizen police academy to better understand the police department and to help police make the city safer.

“I think getting information to be able to you know roll back out to the people I know, my family and friends,” explained Johnson. “Because Chief Kral he’s been doing a lot of good work and a lot of good programs.

Glassboro Intermediate School got career experience from crime scenes to aviation

Glassboro Intermediate School guidance counselors David Davenport Jr. and Brittinee Garcia always encourage students to research all the personal and professional opportunities available to them. 

This school year, they planned a comprehensive Career Day to enable students to learn more about the diverse career opportunities available in the world today.

With dozens of careers represented, the future was wide open.

The Glassboro students rotated among the presentations, with each student learning about two of their favorite careers. Thirty-six presenters spoke about 27 careers. The school featured a variety of careers, incorporating both private and public sector employment, careers requiring a college education, and careers that required other preparation.

Tour PwC Canada’s Digital Experience Centre

PwC Canada’s new Digital Experience Centre is part crime scene investigation training, part virtual reality arcade, and part playground.

It seems like every office is experimenting with some sort of Labs space these days. But at PwC, the consulting agency is building on its global experience. There are a network of 35 similar spaces around the world, including in Tokyo, New York, and London.

This 8,000 square-foot space will see PwC work alongside its clients, using outside-the-box thinking to solve business problems. In the virtual reality room, journalists are demoing immersive experiences created for public sector clients. That includes applications in health, military, and social justice areas.

In the IoT space, this demo is set up to show how a radio link can help monitor autonomous cars navigating a busy highway. When this system detects problems with any one car, that feedback is sent to all cars to help them adapt.

Rhodesology Camps will Give Students a Fun Hands On Experience

How would you like your kids to do some hands on learning and have some fun too.  Next week, Rhodes State College will be offering 9 different camps as part of their Rhodesology 101 program.  The camps include Measurement Madness, The Write Track, Crime Scene Investigation, Dissection Connection, Cool Chemistry, Photography and Video Editing 101, Rocket Propulsion, Sports and Fitness and Drones.  The camps are divided into a morning session (8:30 am to 12 pm) or afternoon session (12:30 pm to 4 pm).  The session will not only be a fun learning opportunity for students in the 6th through 10th grades, but could help them explore career options too.
