The Mob Museum hosts sixth anniversary commemorative events

To celebrate six years of educating the community as well as visitors from around the world, The Mob Museum, The National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, announces a week of special events and debut of three new, permanent exhibit additions at 300 Stewart Avenue, Las Vegas, NV 89101.

Anniversary on Feb. 14, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. – free admission for locals and new permanent exhibits Open to the Public.  Nevada residents will receive free admission and non-Nevada residents will receive buy-one, get-one admission all day. In addition, the Museum opens a brand-new exhibition and two new experiential spaces that day:

Organized Crime Today Exhibition: Featuring artifacts, graphics and a large, interactive, 17-foot-wide Global Networks touchscreen wall, this exhibition space brings the story of organized crime into the present day, as well as modernizes the way the Museum tells that story. MLK Day events planned at University of Michigan, EMU and Cleary

ANN ARBOR, MI – Several Martin Luther King Jr. Day event are planned on area college campuses in the coming days to commemorate the civil rights icon’s impact.

Symposium

UM is once again hosting its Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Symposium, which includes a number of events beginning Wednesday Jan. 10.  

The symposium will be capped off on Jan. 15, when UM welcomes award-winning actor, best-selling author and philanthropist Hill Harper to deliver its annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Symposium keynote memorial lecture in January.

Art exhibits, meetings top area events – Austin American

Jane and Eric Wilson art reception: 1:30 to 3 p.m. at the Lake Travis Community Library, 1938 Lohmans Crossing, Austin. Jane Wilson, a member of the Lakeway Painters, uses watercolors to paint subjects such as landscapes, birds and foliage. Eric Wilson is a multimedia painter who works primarily outside in half-hour bursts. For information, call 512-263-2885.

Teen Citizen Police Academy

The Irvine Police Department graduated its third Teen Citizen Police Academy class on July 28.

The week-long course, offered once a year during summer, gives Irvine teens age 14-18 an in-depth look into the day-to-day operations of the police department. Participants learn about traffic enforcement, crime scene investigation, special weapons and tactics and more.

National Night Out events to be held on August 1st

CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. – The Town of Cheektowaga will join over 30 million people across the United States in celebrating the 34th Annual National Night Out on August 1st.

The event is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local anti-drug and anti-crime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit in the crime prevention campaign and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

2017 marks the 30th year that the Town of Cheektowaga has participated in Night Out.  This year, the first ever Cheektowaga’s Favorite Pizza Contest will be held from 6 PM to 8 PM.  It features around 25 of the town’s favorite pizzerias at three different venues

Maxwell Chapel AME Church, 835 Moores Chapel Cemetery Road, Graham, will hold CommUNITY Day from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 15. There will be meet and greet, music, games face painting and health information.

First Christian United Church of Christ, 415 S. Church St., Burlington, will have a summer symposium from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. July 17–19 with L.D. Russell, a senior lecturer in religious studies at Elon University.

The Humane Society is selling tickets for the Burlington Royals’ Bark in the Park. The event takes place twice, July 18 and Aug. 1, at 7 each night. Tickets are $7
