Prosecutor: Defendant researched murder before killing girlfriend

EDWARDSVILLE — A former Alton man did an Internet search on whether a single .22-caliber shot to the head would kill a person, shortly after he allegedly shot his girlfriend, a prosecutor told a jury Monday.

Assistant State’s Attorney Lauren Heischmidt said in her opening statement that Cory Osborne, 32, also researched “do you need to have a gun to be arrested for murder.” That research was done seven minutes after victim Stacie Williams told him she was through with him.

The prosecutor outlined several pieces of evidence the state is expected to submit in the case of Osborne, who is accused of murdering his former girlfriend, Williams, on Feb. 18, 2015, in Granite City. “He put a bullet to the back of her head because she was done with him,” Heischmidt said. She said that, before the murder, Osborne had kicked and beaten Williams.

Heischmidt said Osborne and Williams had been living
