Revamp Crime Scene Investigation Procedure, Use Technology: SC to Govt

New Delhi: Underscoring the importance of technology in criminal investigation, the Supreme Court has asked the Central government to consider a rehaul of crime scene investigation procedure by making digital photography and videography a must.

According to the Court, the digital photographs and videos should be recorded without delay and must be shared across various police stations on a real time basis so as to make criminal investigation sharper and faster.

“We have seen how Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) officers in US visit the crime scene with body-worn cameras. This act as a deterrent apart from being a useful tool in collecting evidence,” observed a bench of Justices Adarsh K Goel and Uday U Lalit on Tuesday.

Initiating its exercise with the crime scene photography, the bench pointed out that cameras with

Overcome Roadblocks to Recruit, Hire and Retain Officers

Police departments are finding it increasingly difficult to hire and keep officers and other personnel. Though several factors contribute to this, one of the most common reasons is the public’s overall perception of law enforcement. Departments can change this outlook by being transparent, positive and reaching out to the community as well as utilizing recruiting tactics that are easy and effective.

Time, money and the public eye

Lubbock Independent School District Police Department (Texas) Chief Jody Scifres says one reason that may be keeping people from applying is due to the use of body-worn cameras. The use of body-worn cameras is a safety aide for officers, however, to new patrolmen it could be a deterrent. Since video footage is often viewed by the public, potential officers may find it intimidating to be subject to scrutiny of their actions.

Another factor often difficult to get around is the fact that police work

Former crime scene investigator gives forensics and 3-D laser systems presentation

A former crime scene investigator, Ryan Rezelle, spoke about how technology affects investigations, the process of crime scenes and his work as an investigator Monday in the Science Hall.

Most people don’t have a clear understanding of what crime scene investigators (CSI) do, Rezelle said.

“It’s been fictionalized so much by television that I really haven’t got a chance to share what this is all about,” Rezelle said.

In his presentation he discussed what it means to be a CSI and how technology such as the 3-D laser systems can help that field in getting a basic layout of a large area including distinct measurements.

“I was really excited when Ryan agreed to do our seminar,” said Melissa Bailey, director of the master of science forensic science program. “I knew he was going to do a great presentation though.  He’s got tons of stories

Crime scene investigators mysteriously visit two abortion centers

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama (Operation Rescue) – Somewhat of a mystery has developed over the past few days as a second group of pro-life activists describe the presence of Crime Scene Investigation van at their local abortion facility.

Last week, Operation Rescue reported on the presence of a Palm Beach County Crime Scene unit at Presidential Women’s Center in West Palm Beach, Florida, on February 6, 2018. It was unclear why the unit was dispatched to that abortion facility, but given the fact that PWC was referred to the State Attorney General’s office by the U.S. House Select Investigative Panel on Infant Lives for illegally trafficking in aborted baby remains, it raised hopes the Crime Scene unit was gathering evidence in that case.

Since then, pro-life activists in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, told Operation Rescue that a similar Crime Scene unit was seen at the West Alabama Women’s Center abortion facility on February 3, 2018.

However, additional details
