Drug deal gone bad

PAOLA – The specifics of a drug deal dispute that resulted in the death of 23-year-old Heather Briggs last summer were outlined during emotional testimony at a preliminary hearing Feb. 7 at the Miami County Courthouse.

The defendants at the hearing were 29-year-old Kevin Stevens and 27-year-old Michael Pearce, two of the seven people who were arrested and charged with felony murder following the fatal incident that took place at about 2 a.m. July 21 in the 31500 block of Lookout Road.

Briggs was killed after being run over by a vehicle, and the seven defendants were initially all charged with first-degree murder in the commission of a felony, which is more commonly known as felony murder. The underlying felony in all cases is distribution of methamphetamine.

The charge is an off-grid felony punishable by 25 years to life imprisonment, but plea deals were offered to all seven of the defendants by Miami
